Three law students from South East Technological University (WIT) recently completed a three week summer work placement at the Property Registration Authority (PRA) in Waterford.
All three students had just completed the second year of their studies and were selected by the Department of Applied Arts at SETU on the basis of academic merit. Mr Sean Finn from Waterford is studying for a BA (Hons) in Law and recently won the Nolan, Farrell & Goff Student of the Year award at the Institute, Ms Edel Mullett from New Ross, Co. Wexford is also on the BA (Hons) in Law course and Mr Laura King from Dunmore East, Co. Waterford is studying for a BA in Legal Studies.
The students’ work experience included practical experience relating to the registration of ownership and interests in property for which the Property Registration Authority has the statutory responsibility in Ireland. The work experience is coordinated by Carmel Brennan, lecturer in Land Law at the Department of Applied Arts who said, “I would like to acknowledge our sincere appreciation to the PRA in facilitating our land law students to gain invaluable insight into aspects of land law which greatly enhance their studies and career prospects.”
Sean Finn who worked at the PRA in August stated, “I would like to thank everyone at the Property Registration Authority who made my time there both enjoyable and informative. I have no doubt that the experience gained will stand to me in the future”.
Dr Michael Howlett, Head of Department of Applied Arts said, “The development of work placement opportunities for SETU law students places our graduates at an advantage to pursue a broader range of careers in law. We value enormously the support of Waterford Law Society in supporting our annual student debates; Nolan, Farrell and Goff Solicitors for their generous annual financial student bursary; and the Property Registration Authority in supporting a long standing tradition of legal education at SETU. We continue to build our professional links with local industry as an integral part of enriching the study of law at WIT” For information and a list of courses in WIT’s Department of Applied Arts
