Four SETU researchers who submitted applications under the Irish Research Council New Foundations Scheme were successful in their respective bids
All four SETU researchers have been awarded funding under the Irish Research Council ‘New Foundations’ scheme, covering a diverse array of research themes and a delivering a 100% success rate for the Institute compared to a national average of 39%.
The scheme supports eligible researchers who intend to pursue research and networking activities within and across disciplines. New Foundations provides support for research actions, the development of networks, conference development, conference participation or attendance, the creation of workshops and/or more general activities designed to communicate the outcomes and values of academic research in Ireland and beyond.
The popular scheme involves a highly competitive application process, with winning bids selected from a pool of applications covering the full breadth of disciplines and locations nationally, individually reviewed by the Irish Research Council.
Among the successful applicants was Dr Niamh Maguire, lecturer in Criminal Law and Criminology in the School of Humanities’ Dr Jennifer Yeager, lecturer in Psychology, and Dr Mike Kinsella, lecturer in Chemistry/Organic chemistry in the in the School of Science & Computing. A fourth candidate was successful with details yet to be announced..

Dr Jennifer Yeager is the principal investigator and project coordinator on the Waterford Oral History Project. Dr Yeager is also working on the Endophenotype Modification and Evaluation in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder study with Dr Dave Delany.

Dr Niamh Maguire has several funded research projects in progress, covering topics such as the links between alcohol regulation and public order offences and pre-sentence reports; funded by European and national funding streams.

Dr Mike Kinsella is a researcher at the Pharmaceutical and Molecular Biotechnology Research Centre (PMBRC) where he manages two large European funded projects. The New Foundations award will assist the development of an international network in the area of organocatalysis and green synthesis, which is facilitated by a number of networking trips to academic institutions in the UK, Europe and the United States.
