Path into research
I did my primary degree (Bachelor of Business) in WIT, I knew I wanted to do a masters and read about Prof Bill O Gorman and his research into entrepreneurship and applied to work with him. I got the position and the rest as they say is history.
My PhD title
The effect and influence of gatekeepers on technology transfer on Institutes of Technology in Ireland.
About my PhD in layman’s terms
I was looking at the key people in IOTs that had a major role in the TT processes within their IOTs. What their influence was and how they used their networks to influence the process. I also spoke to key people within the government.

Making a difference
After my PhD finished I ended up working within the science field which was an interesting move. I used the skills I gained from working with the TSSG and networking to facilitate me in this role. My PhD had an indirect effect on my role within the nutrition for vision space.
What are you doing now?
I have finished up my role in the science space after seven years and now I am doing freelance research into the relationship between the ICT sector and education providers. This work is with the Regional Skills Forum.
How has your PhD influenced your career path?
It’s made me a better networker, a hard worker, attention to detail and someone who does not give up despite challenges that may come my way.
Anything else you'd like to mention?
I wouldn’t change a thing! WIT gave me the best education to equip me to take on any challenge.
25 years of PhD graduates was marked at Waterford Institute of Technology in 2018. The institute was one the first of Ireland's regional technical colleges to award PhDs in 1993.
