A unique aspect of the MBS Study Programme is that students have a negotiation-type scenario in Belgium as preparation for their future careers
More than 45 masters-level students participated in the annual Graduate Business International Study Programme to Brussels & Leuven in Belgium meeting the Irish Ambassador, MEPs and government officials, European academics and entrepreneurs, as well as sampling the delights of Belgian culture and cuisine.
Earlier this year, against the backdrop of the Irish general election, the students engaged with the heart of European Union decision-making, visiting the European Parliament, the Irish Permanent Representation and meeting the Irish Ambassador to Belgium, His Excellency Eamonn MacAodha. Sean Kelly, Deirdre Clune and Nessa Childers of the European Parliament advised the students as they researched aspects of the European economy and marketing challenges.
Indeed, in a unique aspect of the Study Programme, the students are challenged to research and present whilst in Belgium in an international and interactive setting, in a negotiation-type scenario as preparation for their future careers.
Residing at the historical and entirely renovated Leuven Institute for Ireland in Europe, the students had various seminars with leading academics Professors Marnique DeKimpe and Jan Van Hove and senior manager at the European Investment Bank, Finbarr O’Sullivan. A visit to the state-of-the-art microchip development facilities at IMEC – an offshoot of the Katholieke University of Leuven – enabled the students to see how the technology of tomorrow is being developed today in close collaboration between industry and academia.
Prof. Denis Harrington, Head of Graduate Business, who accompanied the students to Belgium with his colleagues Dr Sheila O'Donohoe and Mr Gerard Arthurs, said that ‘this trip significantly contributes to the internationalisation of our students, challenging them to step out of the Irish classroom and educational context and test them in an innovative and participatory manner.’
