The Sigerson Cup is the top tier of Men’s Football and is regarded as a prestigious competition amongst the Third Level community and beyond.
WIT’s Men’s Football team compete in the second tier competition, the Trench Cup.
“The club has certainly come along way over the past couple of years and having played in the last three Trench Cup Finals in a row, it really highlights just how close SETU are to breaking into top tier that is Sigerson football,” explains GAA Development officer Katie Redmond..
This year's finals weekend will take place in Santry Avenue in Dublin and will be hosted by Trinity College. Semi-finals will take place tomorrow Friday 16th February with the finals on Saturday 17th February.
Having won the Quarter Final on Tuesday, 30 January, the SETU players now look forward to a Semi- Final meeting with LIT Friday, 6 February at 1pm. The other Semi-Final sees Mary I face Letterkenny at 3.30pm.
“To date, the lads have showed great determination and commitment with excellent ground work being shown in this year’s league campaign,” adds Redmond who outlines the journey to the Semi-Final below.
Trench Cup Quarter Final: Tuesday, 30 January
On Tuesday, 30 January our Senior Men’s Football Team travelled to Dundalk IT to take on Coleraine University in the Trench Cup Quarter Final. Our boys started strong and went two in front after 5 minutes; however, Coleraine then settled and slotted home two points to cancel out our lead. From here, it was level pegging with both teams keeping the score board ticking over. However, just before half time, we burst through the Coleraine defence and raised the green flag. At half time SETU led 1.04 to 0.05. The second half started and SETU upped their game and scored a number of excellent points. The game ended in our favour, SETU 1.11 Coleraine 1.08.
League Campaign
League Semi-Final: Wednesday, 15 November
On a cold Wednesday evening our Senior Men’s Football team travelled to Sarsfield GAA Grounds in Kildare to take on old rivals DKIT in the Division 2 League Semi Final. Having had our hearts broken in last year’s Trench Cup Final to DKIT, our men certainly owed them one. From start to finish SETU showed true heart and spirit and came out on top by the narrowest of margins beating the Louth side by 1 point to qualify for the League Final against the Garda College.
League Final: Tuesday, 21 November
On Tuesday, 21 November the lads took on the Garda College in Dunmore Co Kilkenny. Despite a huge effort from our boys, the Garda College who play in top tier Football that is Sigerson proved too strong and came out on top (WIT 0.09 Garda College 2.15), a score-line that certainly does not reflect the efforts shown by SETU. It must be said that reaching the Final shows great promise going forward for this talented side and was certainly a worthwhile experience and was used for Championship preparation.
