Wexford FC win a closely contested affair in the WIT Vikings Boys Soccer Cup after a great day of pre-season National League action in the WIT Arena

The annual WIT Vikings Boys Soccer Cup took place recently at the WIT Arena and acted as a pre-season tournament for the Under 17 boys National League teams from Shelbourne FC, Wexford FC, Carlow-Kilkenny FC and local club Waterford FC. This was an initiative organised collectively by WIT Vikings Sport and WIT Vikings Soccer Club with an emphasis on both sport & education.

The football action kicked off at 10am and the tournament structure ensured that all teams would play three games. The impressive facilities and outstanding all weather pitches at the WIT Arena were used for the tournament which meant the games were ran off simultaneously.

The first round of games saw both Waterford FC and Wexford FC come out on top against Carlow/Kilkenny FC and Shelbourne FC respectively with both games finishing on a score line of 2-1. The second round of games saw Wexford FC beating Carlow/Kilkenny FC 4-0 with Waterford FC coming out on top again on a 2-1 score line against Shelbourne FC. This ensured it was all to play for in the penultimate round of games seeing a straight shootout between Waterford and Wexford FC to see who would come out on top and similarly between Carlow/Kilkenny FC for 3rd and 4th place. Two excellent games saw very little between the teams with Shelbourne FC winning 2-1 to secure 3rd place and Wexford crowned winners on the day with a 1-0 win.

Event organiser and WIT Vikings Soccer first team manager Séan Geoghegan was delighted with the day. “It was great to see such good quality football with the competitive nature of games, providing terrific entertainment for those in attendance. It also an opportunity for both players and parents to experience all that WIT has to offer from an educational and sporting perspective. I would like to thank all those that made the day possible; my colleagues at WIT Vikings Sport and WIT Arena, the referees and officials from the Waterford Referees Society and of course most importantly the various clubs - their mentors and players. I’d like to wish all clubs the very best of luck in the season ahead. Our attention now turns to welcoming our in augural girls tournament next month”.

The day itself provided some top-class football action with the event also providing a platform for players and parents to avail of information relating to college courses, WIT Vikings Sport and Scholarship opportunities. Participants also took advantage of facility tours of the state-of-the-art WIT Arena.

Wexford FC manager Mark Doran outlined how they were ‘delighted to receive an invite to the Viking Cup, it was our first time competing in it and we would love to return next year. It was great to get the opportunity to play in such quality facilities. Most of the squad had never been to WIT Arena, for them to get a tour and hear about the courses and scholarships was a real eye opener for them and something that may act as a catalyst to becoming a 3rd level student in WIT. The organisation on the day was first class as was the structure of the day. On the pitch we were delighted to win all three matches. As a manager it was a great opportunity to see all my squad compete against some of the best players in the country. Wexford FC look forward to returning next year to defend the Viking Cup’
