WIT are now welcoming applications from students for 2017/2018 Sports Scholarship Programme with the addition of its new Emerging Talent Programme
The Sport Scholarship Programme currently in its 16th year continues to attract top sporting talent in all codes from across the South East and beyond.
This year sees pharmaceutical giants Bausch & Lomb support the Soccer Scholarship Programme at SETU by helping with the academic and sporting development of two SETU soccer players for the 2017/2018 season.
While scholarship bursaries are offered, the Scholarship Programme places a strong emphasis on academic support to students along with personal and sporting development. Workshops are provided in the area of mental health, cooking, sport psychology and nutrition while medical and physiotherapy support is provided to the students.
The Institute’s impressive new €20million SETU Arena provides sport science support and access to the High Performance Unit for the scholarship students. A 60m indoor running track, large indoor hall and recreational gym has also been recently completed adding to an impressive outdoor area.
This year’s GAA scholarship students include GAA Scholarships 2016 Senior Hurling Player of the Year Austin Gleeson and Camogie Player of the Year Denise Gaule, as well as Meighan Farrell and Julianne Malone also receiving All Star Camogie awards for 2016. New to the GAA programme is All Ireland Minor Hurling Winner Michael Whelan from Tipperary. SETU continue to attract talent from the Midlands with Offaly sharp shooter Mairead Daly as one of three awarded on the programme from the Faithful county alongside Westmeath senior footballer Boidu Sayeh.
Newly crowned FAI Cup champions Cork City are represented on the programme by goalkeeper Matthew Connor while the addition of Chelsee Snell who made her Champions League debut for Wexford Youths Ladies adds to what is already a strong contingent of Youths Ladies currently studying at SETU.
There were also first time awards for highly related international athletes Michael Irwin (Archery) and David McClure (Kayaking).
Sport Scholarship Programme coordinator Alan Malone said: “We are delighted once more to reward our leading sporting talent with the support necessary to continue to better themselves both academically and in their respective sport. Sport plays such an important part of Irish life and our Scholarship Students are not only ambassadors for SETU but role models in society.
This year SETU awarded 52 students with SETU Sport Scholarships alongside Gaelic Players Association (GPA), Munster Council and Bausch & Lomb scholarship packages. Prospective students will have the opportunity to speak with SETU Sport Scholars at the SETU Open Day will held at the SETU Arena on Friday 20 January 2017.
