Delve in to the life of a member of the Waterford senior camogie team and a WIT Vikings sport scholarship athlete in this interview with Orla Hickey

Orla Hickey is a fourth year Exercise & Health Studies student and has been an active member of the WIT GAA club since her first year in WIT. Orla is a current Munster GAA scholarship student in WIT and represents Waterford senior camogie with the past number of years.

Orla will play a key part in WIT's bid to win their 9th Ashbourne cup title this weekend. WIT Vikings GAA club, in conjunction with CCAO Third Level Camogie, will host the UPMC Ashbourne cup final this weekend 14th-16th of February in WIT Arena.

Being selected for Waterford for the Go Games in 2009
Selected to represent Waterford in Feile skills competition
College Camogie recognition award in 2018
Currently on the Waterford Senior Camogie team

What is your favourite memory from your sporting career so far?
Playing in Thurles when I was picked to for the go games, it was the first time I played there

What is your personal aim this year?
To start for the Waterford senior camogie team and hopefully get a step further this year in championship

Who was your sporting idol growing up?
Brick Walsh and Tony Browne

How do you prepare for each event?
I try to get organised the night before a match as I don’t like to be rushing. I would get all my gear ready and would check it several times before I leave to be sure I don’t forget anything. I also listen to music before matches.

What advice would you give to Athletes wanting to improve?
Most important thing is to enjoy it. Keep working hard at it, and the rest will follow. You can only get better if you practice.

What do you do to relax/unwind?
Go for walks or visit my grandparents (for the grub and chat)

How do you balance work/college/training?
Sometimes it can be hard as you might have loads of college work to try get done but for me training helps me de stress about college. It helps clear the head.

What was the best advise you were ever given?
Don’t give up, it may get hard, but it will be worth it.
Do you get nervous before big races/competitions and if so how do you deal with it?
I am not someone who gets really nervous. Before a big game I get giddy so maybe that’s my way of dealing with nerves, but I don’t dwell on it too much. I try to enjoy the moment.
