The premier and 3rd team from SETU Viking Soccer Club look forward to two cup finals next week in what will be a historic occasion for the club.
WIT Viking Soccer Club look forward to two cup finals next week in what will be a historic occasion for the club. The men’s second team were denied after extra time which would have seen three SETU teams reach the penultimate stages of their cup competitions but it is still a great opportunity to bring some silverware back to Waterford.
The men's premier team have been in excellent form in the Perpetual Cup where they have defeated IT Carlow, Cork IT and IT Sligo to reach the final of the competition. It took a huge effort from SETU to overcome IT Sligo in the semi-final as the game finished 5-3 after extra time. Mark O'Keefe proved to be the hero on the day slotting home 4 goals, to give SETU their first cup final appearance since 2011. SETU will face TU Dublin Blanchardstown Campus in the final with the hope of bringing the Perpetual Cup back to SETU for the first time since 1999.
Tom Grinsell, SETU Sports Manager, has been impressed with the work being done by the club: "The soccer club has made huge progress over the last 2-3 years. To reach two cup finals is a great credit to the players and management. It’s great to see all the hard work paying off"
WIT's 3rd team have been equally as impressive throughout their campaign. Victories over Ballyfermot CFE, Rathmines CFE, GMIT Galway and Dundalk IT have seen SETU progress to the closing stage of the Eustace Cup. Ryan Harris' wonder goal proved to be the difference between the sides in the semi-final where SETU ground out victory to reach the final for the first time since winning the competition in 2014.
