"The exposure to the wide range of modules and opportunities over the two years was brilliant and I made a lot of friends and connections which is important".
My background:
I completed my undergraduate in Business and Sport and Recreation Management in 2009 and I have worked extensively across the leisure centre since then. I worked in various leisure centres progressing my skills and qualifications within the leisure industry. I am currently working as an assistant manager and my main passion is swim teaching and working with older adults. I am also a volunteer coach with my local running club and deliver training sessions and couch to 5k programmes.
My motivation for doing the programme was:
I had wanted to return to college for awhile so when the COVID pandemic hit I took the opportunity. I wanted to develop my current skillset and gain a new qualification while working in a managerial position, I was lacking the knowledge and experiences in certain areas. I also wanted to up skill for future career prospects as industries are constantly changing and it is important to keep up with trends.
The impact on my career:
Having undertaken the course part-time it allowed me to continue to work but it also enabled me to apply what I was learning in college at work. Due to my assistance and contributions in the workplace I received a promotion. I am more confident and adaptive in the workplace having worked with colleagues on different team projects. It has given me the belief to manage and work better as a team player.
The module or part of the course that will benefit me the most:
The exposure to the wide range of modules and opportunities over the two years was brilliant and I made a lot of friends and connections which is important. The diverse range of speakers in "Contemporary Business Issues" was a great platform to learn from. Working as a team member on projects such as the business simulation and delivering workshops allowed me to experience first-hand what it is like to work as part of a team. Everyone had different experiences and views and being able to learn from others has been great.
My advice for adult learners considering this programme is:
Be open minded about the course content. There were many modules on the course I was unsure of before commencing but I gained something from every lecture. Do not be afraid to ask for help from lecturers and use the services the college supplies, I found the library and other introductory workshops very helpful in the beginning.
The course was time consuming but in order to get the most out of it, it is important to be able to set aside specific time to study and complete assignments. A good support network from family and friends is also helpful.
Why I would recommend studying in Waterford:
The support I received from my lecturers and the staff in SETU was brilliant, this is an integral aspect when undertaking any course. The lecturers are realistic in what they set out and there are great opportunities to seek feedback which is a valuable learning experience. The campus is easy to access and the library is a great facility for studying.
My college experience also included:
Trip abroad as part of course
Benefited from Peer 2 Peer participation
