To increase participation rates at third level education by students experiencing long term disadvantage and who have the ability to succeed academically but lack the necessary socio-economic and cultural  supports and encouragement.

SETU Waterford will make 20 places available for REACH participants. Successful applicants will receive support in the form of an induction course, additional tutorials, mentoring and educational guidance. Financial assistance may be given towards books, travel, childcare and other expenses.

PLEASE NOTE: the online application process will open on the 5th of February 2021 and will close on the 16th of April 2021. The link will be circulated from the SETU Waterford Access Office and sent directly to the relevant guidance counsellor(s) in the eligible secondary schools in the South East region.

Applications will only be considered from students who have submitted an application for a SETU Waterford course through the Central Applications Office (CAO) and meet one of the following criteria:

  • Applicant is in State care (e.g. foster/residential/ward of court/under care of HSE) 

  • Applicant is a single parent with no support from immediate family

  • Applicant is a young carer

  • Applicant’s family is a member of an ethnic minority (where English is not the first language)

  • Appliciant/Applicant’s family is a member of other minority groupings (e.g. Traveller community or of Traveller extraction, LGBT etc.)

  • Other extenuating circumstances (e.g. applicant’s suitability has been flagged by the School Care team [1] (or equivalent); applicant’s family is on the School Completion Programme target list; for example the applicant’s family income is very low)

1 The structure of the School Care teams can vary but generally consist of the school principal and/or deputy principal, the guidance counsellor, member of the special needs team, school chaplain and the HSCL teacher. (See NEPS continuum of support guidelines 2010 2.1.5 pg. 19)

Applicants must:

  • Have applied for a course in SETU Waterford by 1st February through the CAO 

  • Attain the minimum entry requirements for the course applied for as outlined in the prospectus  

  • Make an application to the Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) for a Higher Education grant and must be eligible for the Free Fees Initiative (see http://www.studentfinance.ie)

  • Must be a student attending one of the secondary schools in the South East 

From those qualified South East Technological University will then select the successful candidates based on their application forms and their school references.

Information for Students

If you are interested in making an application for the Reach Programme and you are attending an eligible school, please contact your guidance counsellor or school principal.

Information for Schools:

  • Applications for the Reach Programme are only accepted directly from guidance counsellors, school principals or the appropriate staff member in eligible schools

  • Schools may seek the support of our additional programme partners (School Completion Programme and the Home School Liasion Programme) in identifying eligible applicants

  • Application forms are restricted and all eligible schools will receive information via an email to their guidance counsellor on the 2021 application process on or before the 5th of February 2021. If your school has not received this information after this date please email [email protected]

  • The closing date to recieve aaplications is 5pm on the 16th of April 2021.

  • Each school may submit a maximum of two applications for September 2021 entry

  • Applicants who apply for nursing programmes in SETU Waterford will be interviewed. Interview dates to be confirmed but they will take place during the month of May in 2021
