Conference 2013

At this year's event, attended by over 220 delegates, a number of strategies were outlined to increase participation in EU funded Research and Innovation. The conference was organised by InterTradeIreland in association with the Irish Presidency of the EU Council and showcased assistance that will be available to companies and researchers in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Europe to prepare for the upcoming expected €70 billion R&D and innovation fund Horizon 2020 which will come on stream in 2014.  The new fund will provide increased opportunities and a more simplified process to encourage greater participation amongst SMEs.

Overview of HORIZON 2020

Mr Neville Reeve, European Commission

Strategies to maximise participation in HORIZON 2020

Ms Imelda Lambkin, Enterprise Ireland

Your grant proposal, or that of your consortium, will be unique to your research and the funding Call to which you will submit it. The following are a small sample of WIT’s ‘best practises’ however, that are applicable to all Horizon 2020 proposals:

  • Understand the background to your targeted Call: read the general introduction to the relevant Work Programme, as well as the ‘Guide for Applicants’ (if available), and any related policy documents
  • Ensure you and SETU Waterford are eligible to participate – check with the RSU if you’re not 100% certain
  • Work with the right consortium partners: attend networking and information events to build your contacts
  • Involve all stakeholders from day 1, especially multidisciplinary ones: build your proposal around them and the impact your research will have on them
  • Consider gender equality in your proposal, as well as gender in research overall
  • Address your ‘Impact’ section at the scientific/technology, policy, and enterprise levels, as appropriate
  • Stick to the definition of your targeted action: IA vs. RIA vs. CSA, etc. Click here to compare and contrast different types of project.
  • Separate the tasks of writing and editing your proposal: ideally, get a professional copywriter/editor involved
  • Emphasise the added value your proposed project will have on European scale
  • Comply with the EC’s description of open access, and IPR at proposal and implementation stages
  • Write in a straightforward style, while also using references to show your awareness and understanding of technical/EU elements of the work

Enterprise Ireland has a number of supports in place to help you engage with Horizon 2020, and the RSU can assist you in accessing these supports.

  • There’s a ‘Travel Support’ grant to help you meet and work with Horizon 2020 partners at conferences and events.
  • If you wish to coordinate a Horizon 2020 proposal, there’s also a ‘Coordinator Support’ grant in place.
  • Click to identify the National Contact Point in your area – contact the RSU if you’re unsure who’s who
  • If you’re working with an SME, Enterprise Ireland have a dedicated support for the SME Instrument in Horizon 2020
  • There are a number of webinars on various Horizon 2020 topics also available
