Call for Applications is now open

A call for application to the HEA COVID 19 Costed and non-costed Extensions Programme is now open for WIT applicants whose individual award, research project or period of study has been affected. The deadline for submission of your FULL Application is the 19th April 2021 at 5pm. Full details of this process are outlined in the attached Appendix 1: Cost Extensions for Research Disrupted by COVID-19 Terms and conditions. 

NB: Please also read Appendix 2: Eligibility Flowchart before submitting a full application.

Applications will be accepted from:

  • Holders of Individual PhD/postdoctoral or research fellowships or self-funded PhD students looking for a NCE whose projects were active on the 6 January 2021,
  • WIT Research Staff (contract) employed on a research project or via a Fellowship with an employment contract, whose project was active on the on 6 January 2021.
    • PI’s of a research grant may seek an extension for PhD students/ research staff currently funded by their project award.
    • PI’s are also mandated to apply to their external/internal funding agency for a no-cost extension (NCE) to their project/award as part of this scheme.  

All applicants are mandated to apply to their external funding agency/internal funding programme for a no-cost extension (NCE) for their project/award as part of this scheme.  If this is not completed this should be done in line with your application.

Eligibility for Costed Extensions:

  • The applicant must be a member of research staff with a contract that extends to at least 31st October 2021 or a registered research student at the time of application.
  • The research conducted by the applicant, as described in the application, must have been in progress on 6 January 2021
  • The Project/Student must be at risk from the Covid-19 situation and attempts to restructure/redesign the project have failed.
  • Research staff or students co-funded by industry, all relevant State Aid rules must be fully complied with.

Not Eligible to apply for a Costed Extension:

  • Research staff or students fully funded by industry are not eligible.
  • Research projects which were not ongoing on 6th January 2021.
  • Research projects who have received funding under Call 1 of the HEA COVID-19 Costed Extension Programme
  • Research project not deemed at risk.
  • Research staff or students who are self-funded and not in receipt of a stipend or government grant. If affected by the COVID-19 crisis, they should apply for a no-cost extension and may be eligible to have continuation fees paid.

To apply: 

  • The application form is to be completed by the research student / member of contract research staff, in consultation with their supervisor/principle investigator or research manager.

Please note:

  • Priority must be given on the basis of timing to those whose current end date for their research contract or course of study is between October 2020 and end of June 2021. 
  • The second highest priority on the basis of timing will be given to those whose current end date for their research project or course of study is between June and December 2021. 
  • Consideration will be given to the type of research involved, and the extent to which it will have been possible to conduct the research while working remotely.
  • Considerations of disruption due to caring responsibilities or similar will be taken into account in making awards.
