Professor Bill O’Gorman, 2018 BCERC Co-Director, Centre for Enterprise Development and Regional Economy (CEDRE)

It is truly exciting to be part of the excellent team that will be hosting you here in Waterford during the 2018 Babson College Entrepreneurship Research Conference (BCERC). The conference will take place in the newly opened and largest conference centre in South East Ireland, the SETU Waterford Arena which is part of Waterford Institute of Technology’s west campus.

Since 2000, I have been attending the BCERC and have always found the presentations, papers and discussions stimulating and impactful for both my research and work here in CEDRE. One of the most important aspects of BCERC is its international dimension and the bringing together of entrepreneurship scholars from many nations across the world. As a result, over the years many of the BCERC debates have had a direct influence on CEDRE’s research activities in domains such as female entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship education, and indentifying the factors that stimulate entrepreneurs to engage with and remain engaged with business learning networks. Leading research from previous BCERCs has also provided CEDRE with concepts that have shaped our analysis, thinking and inputs to enhancing regional entrepreneurship, enterprise and innovation policies.

In summary, my advice to all scholars attending BCERC 2018 is to come to the conference prepared to share your research and experience and to learn from others so that you too can ‘stand on the shoulder of giants’ in the fields of entrepreneurship research, pedagogy, and practice.

In conclusion, I hope you will also relax and take part in our social events during the week of the conference. These social events are equally important for the sharing and exchange of knowledge that often lead to lasting, international research and collaboration partnerships.

Have a great, informative and collaborative time at BCERC 2018.

Professor Willie Donnelly, President WIT, and Dr. Tom O’Toole, Dean, School of Business

It is an honour for South East Technological University and its School of Business to welcome you to the 38th Babson College Entrepreneurship Research Conference (BCERC). BCERC’s reputation as the world’s leading conference in entrepreneurship research, pedagogy, and practice fits neatly with the Institute’s entrepreneurship and innovation strategies and is aligned with the School’s core theme of developing thinking professionals fit for business and fit for life.

Hosting the BCERC 2018 will also enhance the School’s and Institute’s leadership role in developing and implementing open Regional Innovation Ecosystems. We have no doubt that your time here, presenting and discussing your research with leaders in the field, and your interactions with our entrepreneurship educators and researchers will lead to further significant contributions in the fields of entrepreneurship pedagogy, research and practice.

Welcome. We hope you enjoy your stay with us. We also hope you will take some time off to relax and enjoy our hospitality, traditions, culture, history and picturesque scenery.

Dr. Collette Kirwan, Director of the BCERC Doctoral Consortium 2018

My colleagues and I are delighted to host the BCERC Doctoral Consortium 2018. We are looking forward to welcoming you to South East Technological University (WIT) which is located in the South-East of Ireland. The BCERC Doctoral Consortium team has developed an interactive programme that will be both enriching and rewarding for your personal and research development.

The BCERC Doctoral Consortium will take place in ArcLabs Research & Innovation Centre and the SETU Waterford Arena, both of which are on WIT’s West Campus. The West Campus is a beautiful woodland setting beside the River Suir which is also home to the Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG), the Centre for Enterprise Development and Regional Economy (CEDRE) and 21 micro-enterprises and SMEs (these are a combination of spin-outs from and spin-ins to TSSG). TSSG is one of the largest information and communications technology research groups in Ireland and is renowned in Europe for its leadership in this field of research, application and commercialisation. CEDRE, part of WIT’s School of Business, is an entrepreneurship research and applied education centre for entrepreneurs and regional policy makers. The goal of the ArcLabs Research & Innovation Centre is to provide entrepreneurs and early-stage ventures with the support needed to achieve success in national and international markets. The Centre is also the home of the newly created, Enterprise Ireland supported, NDRC@ArcLabs Start-up Accelerator. The SETU Waterford Arena is the largest conference centre in the South East of Ireland. It is the newest addition to the SETU Waterford Campus and the venue for the BCERC Annual Conference. This multi-purpose building, also located at WIT’s West Campus, is a conference, entertainment and sporting venue
