The Department of Sport and Exercise Science engages with second level schools and student of the region in a number of ways
Try Sport and Nutrition
This is a one day taster event for 5th year, 6th year and further education students, allowing them to “be a student for the day” and sample classes in areas such as sports nutrition, coaching, sports science, sports management and strength and conditioning. It takes place at the SETU Waterford Arena and is led by Department of Sport and Exercise Science staff. The event runs in October and / or February and is advertised to schools and on the SETU website in advance.

Sports Science Experience for Leaving Certificate Physical Education Classes
The session, organised at the SETU Waterford Arena, gives students undertaking leaving certificate exam physical education, practical experience of sports science testing. We can facilitate PE teachers and their student groups who are rotated through the following:
- Biomechanical analysis of squat
- Physiological assessment of blood lactate and oxygen uptake
- Speed, power and agility testing
- Sports psychology
- Sports nutrition
- Circuit training, progression and regression of exercises

Schools’ Liaison
We are happy to visit schools to talk to class groups or selected students on programmes /and or careers in sport, exercise, nutrition and health promotion. We are available to attend school careers fairs. We can also arrange to chat to student groups or individual students via Zoom or on the phone.
