Welcome to the Department of Applied Arts
It is my pleasure to introduce you to the Department of Applied Arts, Waterford Institute of Technology. The Department has a complement of 68 lecturers and provides honours degree programmes to over 1,700 students. Undergraduate areas of expertise include Legal Studies, Criminology, Sociology, Psychology, Social Policy, Social Science, Social Research, Social Care and Early Childhood Studies. We offer taught postgraduate programmes in areas such as Social Justice, Public Policy, Applied Spirituality and Social Studies. Also, there are opportunities for students to pursue research based studies leading to master and doctoral awards.
The Department is to the forefront in furthering the internationalisation of the Institute and has hosted Summer Programmes for International students for the past 18 years. Students from the US, Japan, South Korea, Mexico and Egypt have undertaken courses on programmes related to ‘Irish Culture, its Social and Legal Systems’; ‘Irish Constitutionalism in Context’ and ‘The Irish Criminal Justice System in Practice’. The overall aim is to offer students the opportunity to have an international educational experience. The Department also hosts students under the Erasmus Exchange system and we encourage our students to avail of short term study abroad opportunities in countries such as Germany, Holland, UK , USA and Canada.
