Study Irish culture, society and history in Waterford, Ireland’s oldest city, hosted by Waterford Institute of Technology, one of Ireland’s top-performing third-level colleges

Academic Program

This rich and varied program aims to enable students acquire a knowledge and understanding of Ireland and its historical emergence. It will give participants an appreciation of the uniqueness of Irish identity, its literature, the importance of religion, its educational system, sport and music.

It will give students an understanding of the changing nature of current Irish society and will enable participants, through participative learning, gain a knowledge of the broader aspects of Irish culture and its people.

Indicative Content

  • Irish Identity and History.

  • The Irish Language.

  • The Role of Religion.

  • Education.

  • Literature.

  • Nationalism & Northern Ireland.

  • Sport and Music.

The emphasis in the program is on experiential learning, with interactive classes supplemented by field trips, workshops, visits to historic sites and places of interest, and practical demonstrations.

The program will be delivered by lecturing staff from WIT’s faculty with experience in international education. The program mixes substantive academic content with site visits and demonstrations, as appropriate. The program will contain at least one longer visit to a site of historic or cultural importance relevant to the program.

The immersion of students in a culture different to their own is key to a successful international experience, and this short program maximises opportunities for such learning in a safe and secure environment.

Tours and site visits are an integral part of the learning experience. Amongst the tours and site visits that can be accommodated are visits to:

  • Dublin, including visits to Trinity College, the Abbey Theatre, Kilmainham Gaol or other sites

  • Kilkenny Castle and Rock of Cashel

  • Jameson Distillery and Blarney Castle

  • Dunbrody Famine Ship and Hook Head

  • Glasnevin Cemetery

Study Irish Literature  in Waterford, Ireland’s oldest city, hosted by Waterford Institute of Technology, one of Ireland’s top-performing third-level colleges.

Academic Program

By the end of the program, students will be able to relate in an informed and sensitive manner to the shifting social, political and cultural Irish landscape reflected in Irish poetry, theatre and fiction from the late-nineteenth century to modern times. Students will be able to construct a vision of life in Ireland during the period from the foundation of the Irish state, through a study of the rich and complex literature of that period.

The following will be considered as part of the program:

  • Poetry by WB Yeats, Patrick Kavanagh, Seamus Heaney and others

  • Plays such as JM Synge, The Playboy of the Western World; GB Shaw, John Bull’s Other Island; Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest; Samuel Beckett, Krapp’s Last Tape

  • Fiction by James Joyce and others

Study Irish Theatre in Waterford, Ireland’s oldest city, hosted by Waterford Institute of Technology, one of Ireland’s top-performing third-level colleges, in partnership with the historic Theatre Royal.

Academic Program

The programme offers students a rich combination of academic input and practical theatre experience. Seminars on the Irish theatre will combine with practical workshops on aspects of directing, acting and producing Irish plays. These practical workshops will take place in one of Ireland’s oldest theatres, the Theatre Royal, Waterford and will be led by experienced theatre practitioners.

At the end of the program, students will have engaged with a range of Irish plays and will have grappled with performance aspects of those plays. They will have a clear sense of the development of Irish theatre from the late nineteenth century to the present and will have a keen appreciation for the complexities of the rich and varied Irish theatrical tradition.

Indicative content

The core text for the program will be JM Synge’s The Playboy of the Western World but students will also be exposed to other Irish plays, including those by Yeats, O’Casey, Beckett and Friel.

Programs are delivered by lecturing staff from WIT’s faculty with experience in international education and workshops will be delivered by renowned theatre practitioners. The program will contains a visit to major Dublin theatres and attendance at a performance in at least one.

This program aims to ensure that participants can appreciate the uniqueness of Irish identity,  it  culture and people. It will facilitate students in gaining an understanding of the model of Irish policing, their training and practices and will also introduce students to Irish court structures, sentencing practices and penal system. The program is ideally suited to students of Law and related disciplines.

  • Policing Framework and Practices

  • The Irish Penal System

Accommodation

Students are accommodated on campus in high-quality WIT-owned accommodation.

  • All  accommodation owned and managed by SETU Waterford with dedicated security and management team

  • Apartment style units comprising common fully-fitted kitchen and living room

  • All single en-suite bedrooms

Meals

Meals are provided in SETU Waterford campus restaurants.

Transport

Students will be collected at airport Arrivals by WIT’s own bus fleet and returned to Departures.

Indicative Cost

Approx. $1300 (excluding flights).

Programs are planned and costed according to the needs of individual student groups in consultation with US partner colleges. Programs can be aligned with individual partner college expectations and can be directed towards beginning or advanced students.
