Professional Skills and Work Placement
Professional skills are career competencies that are very much embedded in the programmes in the Department of Science. Skills such as presentations, leadership, project management, collaboration and team work are value –added skills essential to the student’s career.
Students are encouraged to engage in activities such as mentoring, debating, scientific skills competitions, poster preparation and publications, volunteering, committee memberships etc.
Careers Days, C.V. preparation and Interview Skills are activities which the staff in the Department of Science organise for students.
Some Programmes offer students the opportunity to undertake a period of Work Placement for a semester in the third year of their degree, allowing them to put into practice the academic theory which they learned in the years prior to the placement semester. As well as learning new knowledge and skills in industry, they gain valuable insights into working life which helps them to make informed career decisions later. It also helps to develop their curriculum vitae, enhances their employability and helps in the creation of a network of potential contacts for their future career, following graduation.
